Fashion Feng Shui: the verdict

What did you think about my series on the five Fashion Feng Shui types? Did you identify your Feng Shui element and type?

Briefly, the five different elemental types are: Water, the Philosopher, whose style is creative; Wood, the Pioneer, whose style is sporty, Fire, the Pleasure Seeker, whose style is dramatic; Earth, the Peacemaker, whose style is traditional and last (but definitely not least!) Metal, the Perfectionist, whose style is elegant.

It's possible to be one type in your appearance but feel that essentially it isn't really you.  Perhaps you have the golden colouring, soft, full features and apple shape of a Peacemaker, but deep down you have a creative personality. Or you may look and feel like a sporty Pioneer but work in a field where you are expected to wear the styles of a Peacemaker. This is where I like the idea of Feng Shui fashion, as it allows you to add touches of other elements to your wardrobe to express yourself more fully. Maybe you are forced to wear conservative styles in the office where you work, but that doesn't mean you can't wear bright red underwear to express your inner Pleasure Seeker!

If you want to explore the ideas of Fashion Feng Shui more fully, you might want to download a copy of the book shown above.  I won't receive any commission if you decide to buy it, by the way!

Alternatively, if you enjoy playing on Pinterest as I do, why not search for pictures of the different types there? This board in particular has lots of inspiring pins: Jane Rekas. I have also created my own Fashion Feng Shui board: click here.

The picture above immediately appealed to me as I do love a touch of red and purple in my wardrobe. Finally, I believe that fashion should be about wearing what you enjoy and whether you follow the guidelines of Dressing Your Truth, Seasonal Colour Analysis or Fashion Feng Shui, remember that they are only guidelines. Our aim should be to express ourselves and love what we're wearing.

  1. I did enjoy these posts. I have been trying to discover my style for decades. Still not sure :)

    1. Debbie, I think that's half the fun. If you know exactly what your style is and always dress accordingly, life won't have so many surprises for you. I tried on a peplum top, expecting to find that I didn't like it on myself, and ended up buying it!

  2. I had to smile at the idea of the red undies. Or leopard print! This series is interesting but I don't seem to fit any category well enough to say, mostly this but a little of that.

    1. Robin, leopard print undies - yay! When it comes to the different categories, what I like most is the idea of adding a bit of creativity when I feel like it without having to dress totally in a style that doesn't look or feel right on me. Even if, as I said, it's only the undies!

  3. Hi Sue, I have this book from a few years ago. I placed myself in the Perfectionist Peacemaker category. I would be interested in you showing your clothing choices for this category as I always like to see/hear different opinions.

    1. Hi Sharon

I'll have a look at this combination and see what I can come up with. I think it's true that many of us fit into a couple of categories. Would you say that the Perfectionist is dominant in your case?

    2. Hi Sue, sorry I took so long getting back to you. Sick cat-now better.
I think it is more seasonal. Peacemaker in warm weather and perfectionist in cold.

  4. Hi Sue,

I really enjoyed this series, and was quite surprised that the "Water-Philospher" fit me quite well with regard to the clothing choices I seem to make and actually wear. Not so much the physical description as I have very broad shoulders, but the rest of the description (non-physical) was surprisingly on target.

However, I have a strong inclination as well toward the dramatic (Fire-Pleasure Seeker), and my leopard print accessories go beyond undies!! I love sparkle, animal prints, the color red...and do have those kinds of things in my wardrobe as well. Primarily used for "dress up" occasions, although my gray-black-white leopard print scarf gets worn with almost everything all winter!

It was easier for me to see what I am NOT----sporty, or elegant. Can't pull off either of those looks although I admire them on others. Classic/traditional doesn't work for me either.

This was a fun series....thank you for putting the whole idea of Fashion Feng Shui on my radar!

    1. Hi Andrea

What was interesting about your comment was when you said "the clothing choices I seem to make and actually wear". This would suggest that the Water-Philosophy matches your essence and you feel more like you when you wear these clothes. Although I'm mainly a "Wood-Pioneer", I'm often drawn to "Fire-Pleasure Seeker" too - in fact, I have a new red bag on its way to me, as we speak! - as well as elements of the "Water-Philosopher" look.

I'm glad that you enjoyed this series. I may do a couple of other posts on this theme - see my reply to Sharon.

    2. Hi Sue

I'd like to see more on this theme too. I am too much a mix of styles to pinpoint any.

Off to London and Manchester for a week--turns out I have no real cold-weather clothes. It will be nice at first and then chilly (really cold for a Floridian) and wet.

    3. Hi Sue,

You are right....I do indeed feel "more like me" when I wear those sort of flowy, somewhat Bohemian clothes. I adore the "scarf" tops that are out there right now. Oversized, squarish (as if two scarves were joined together) but flowy fabrics with paisley prints and vaguely Asian-inspired appearance/details. I only have a couple of these but find myself wearing them whenever I can!

Would love to see more on this theme....and maybe I should just break down and buy that book!

      Thanks!

  5. Hi Robin

When are you off to London? They've had decent weather recently from what friends and family tell me. We're going the first weekend in July, which coincides with Wimbledon, so we're bound to get some rain! I'll definitely be packing my umbrella! I suggest that you leave a small space in your case in case you need to buy an extra layer to deal with the cold - perhaps something in cashmere?

I've found the Feng Shui Fashion theme fascinating, so will definitely be doing some more posts on this subject.

    Enjoy your trip!

  6. Hi Sue

We left the day I posted that. I can't wear wool (sometimes alpaca but usually none) so I've had to pack everything I could layer. Turns out that's not that much. We;'re near Manchester today and the high will be 15! WishI could wear wool. It would be easier.

  7. Hi Robin

Hope that you're enjoying your trip and that the weather hasn't been too cold (or wet!) for you! Can you wear silk? That might work for an extra layer. Shame that you can't wear wool, especially cashmere, as it's excellent for an extra layer in climates such as the UK.
